Instagram Series Overview
As a part of new weekly series I am going to detail exactly how to build an Instagram and grow the audience. My goal will 10k followers in four months, so we’ll say by September 15th. I just registered the account www.instagram.com/acceleratedreach last week and we currently have 18 followers. Does 10k in four months seem low or high? Please share your thoughts in the comment section.

Lets take a second to talk about why we’re doing this. About eight months ago I was trying to help a friend build an Instagram audience for her travel brand, and the information online was remarkably terrible. If you’ve ever searched online to try to learn how to grow an audience you’ve probably read countless blogs from people with an easy five step guide that looked something like:
- Pick a theme for your account
- Post great pictures
- Use hashtags relevant to your business
- Interact with your audience
- Partner with bigger brands
There’s merit to all of those things and in some capacity those are correct, but at the end of the day I can assure you that 99% of those writers did more than just those basic steps. Furthermore, I couldn’t find anywhere to actually watch somebody build their brand. It wasn’t helpful for me to see somebody who already had 50k followers try to grow it to 100k.
My goal here is to cut through the shit (hint: your filters really aren’t that important) and give you a guidebook to how you can build your audience. This could be a gigantic public failure if we’re not able to grow the account like I think we can, but I’m confident. Why am I so confident? Since starting to work on my friend’s account six months ago (@homebodyabroad) it has grown to 20k+ followers organically and I’ve worked with countless others since then with similar results.
Accelerated Reach Instagram “State of the Union”
My Partner, Rob, and I started the business Accelerated Reach in early May so we literally have zero publicity around us or anything else that could be mistaken for a following. So far I have posted seven pictures and we have 18 followers. My personal brand is relatively small so I will not be using that to influence this what so ever. This will be totally organic and authentic.
How This is Structured
My goal here is going to be to write one new blog post a week around what specifically we are doing to build our audience and how you can do the same for your brand. In addition, I will be answering questions via the comment section, my Twitter @caseymcenry or any other method you’d like to get ahold of me.
I think it goes without saying, but you probably want to follow our Instagram too so you can see what we’re posting.
Ok, so before doing anything else I’d recommend you

Instagram Growth Challenges
The biggest challenge I see with us growing our audience is the type of Instagram account we have. Accelerated Reach is a digital agency, which I suppose isn’t as boring as some companies, but it definitely isn’t a sexy space. If you have an ecommerce, apparel, professional service, restaurant, blog or just about anything else, you should have a much easier time growing your audience.
As an agency it is generally harder for us to create graphics that are relevant to our brand, yet still visually engaging. We can post things like our workspace for the day (cup of coffee and MacBook), digital marketing graphics and other things like that, but since we want to post something almost every day, that can become difficult. Luckily for you, there is probably a lot more beautiful photos that you can be posting. However, if you are already thinking to yourself “shit I don’t know what I’ll be posting in two weeks” have no worries as this will be one of the first things that I address in the next couple of weeks.
The second biggest challenge for me is going to be consistently posting new content. Accelerated Reach is one of four companies that I own outright or co-own so my time is pretty limited. I have a lot of other things going on, so remembering to put up a post every day will definitely be a challenge, but to me I see the value in it so I’ll make time for it. There are also shortcuts that you can take as a business owner to increase what you can get done on Instagram in a short amount of time that I will describe in later posts.
That’s all for this week, but we’re looking forward to getting started and sharing progress with you next week! In the meantime, make sure that you’re subscribed to the newsletter so you can get an update next week when I release my first post.
And remember, worst case is that we end up not being able to grow the account so you get to watch a public failure. Seems like a win-win for you either way?
